Imaging of the equatorial ionosphere

چکیده

The equatorial anomaly is the dominant structure in free electron concentration in the tropical ionosphere. Due to its edges (crests) which are characterised by steep latitudinal gradients in TEC and are temporally and spatially variable, it is one of the ionospheric regions most difficult to image with inversion methods. In this paper we reconstruct an International Reference Ionosphere model of the equatorial ionosphere by employing a grid of virtual ground GPS receivers and actual GPS satellite positions. The MIDAS algorithm, an inversion method for reconstructing the ionosphere as a linear composition of given empirical orthogonal functions, is used. Comparing the true model ionosphere with the resulting images a fine tuning of the basis functions (vertical profile contraints) in the inversion is realised. The essential ingredient of MIDAS inversions is the use of Empirical Orthogonal Functions (Sirovich and Everson, 1992) along which the solution of the inverse problem is assumed to be linearly decomposable (Materassi, 2003). Correlation Structure of the Equatorial Ionosphere

With the successful implementation of the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) for the North America, there is interest in implementing similar systems in other parts of the world. The ionosphere over certain parts of the globe, notably equatorial regions and Brazil in particular, can have a far greater impact on the signals received from the satellites. The Ionospheric corrections form an inte...

Penetration characteristics of the interplanetary electric field to the daytime equatorial ionosphere

[1] Using 8 years of ionospheric drift measurements from the low-latitude JULIA (Jicamarca Unattended Long-term Investigations of the Ionosphere and Atmosphere) radar and the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field data from the ACE (Advance Composition Explorer) satellite, we study the characteristics of the prompt penetration of electric fields to the equatorial ionosphere. A large datab...

Gps-derived Local Tec Mapping over Peninsula Malaysia during Solar Minimum of Sunspot Cycle 24

The ionosphere is the major contributor of errors in Global Positioning System (GPS), especially during the 11-year sunspot cycle. The incoming 11-year sunspot cycle is expected to peak in 2013. The ionosphere condition is distinctly severe during ionospheric disturbances caused by high solar activity, which raises the question of how will this affect the ionosphere in the equatorial region, es...

Solar wind density controlling penetration electric field at the equatorial ionosphere during a saturation of cross polar cap potential

[1] The most important source of electrodynamic disturbances in the equatorial ionosphere during the main phase of a storm is the prompt penetration electric field (PPEF) originating from the high-latitude region. It has been known that such an electric field is correlated with the magnetospheric convection or interplanetary electric field. Here we show a unique case, in which the electric fiel...
